do it yourself: statement art

you know that spot of your home, or room where it's just a little bare and when you walk past it you always think - i really need to find some art to go there. well... if you're into modern art then i've got the perfect idea for you and you can totally do it yourself. let your inner artist out and also release a little frustration out too while you're at it - art really can be therapy.

this really couldn't be any easier, get creative with how you apply your paint to your canvas - throw it, pour it from a metre above, dip your fingers in paint and flick it heck squeeze it straight from the tube. the best thing about this art is that there are no rules, and everyone's piece will be completely unique. don't be threatened by this project, i promise you'll love it and before you know it's kind of addictive to create because each piece is so original. what makes this even easier is you can grab literally everything you need for this project from your local spotlight.

you will need. a canvas, black and white acrylic paint, disposable cups, drop cloth and a paddle-pop stick or disposable knife.

step one. lay down your drop cloth so that it extends at least 50cm away from the canvas on all sides.

step two. mix your desired amount of shades into your disposable cups, use a paddle-pop stick of disposable knife to stir each colour starting with your lightest shade so you don't have to clean your stirrer after each one.

step three. get creative with your paint application - splash, flick, drizzle, throw, splatter *insert more adjectives here* to create your desired look.

step four. leave your canvas to dry, depending on your climate and how thick the paint is in places this may take up to a week.

step five. display/style your new artwork with pride - you made it and no one can ever re create it exactly as you have, it's truly an original artwork.

if you want the print you see styled with my artwork you can grab it below, when you print it just adjust the scale so that the words are proportionate to your desired frame.

if you make your own statement art piece i'd love to see how it turns out, share it with me on social media use the hashtag #mrtimothyjames

dear self - your happiness is before you not behind you

happy monday lovers
this month's #dearself post and the blog’s first guest post, comes to us from my darling friend and all around gorgeous human - Gemma Stanton of the blog namastegem.

look at you! you beautiful thing! all those nights up late, sobbing, listening to yet another taylor swift tune. but you know what, what about those times when the smile couldn't be wiped off your face? the times that you had that overly exuberant feeling to just say exactly how you feel to someone. to connect and bask in the beauty of the moment. you've had so many of those moments and you will, again and again and again. your happiness is before you, not behind you.

as long as you are given another day to wake up to, you have another chance to spin these beautiful, rare, unique and eccentric talents you have to use out in the world. you have roller coasters to ride, bridges to burn, cupcakes to ice, men to fall in love with, yourself to fall in love with, bacon, sugar, chocolate, love, the sparkly emojis, long hugs, swims in the ocean, songs to sing, people to meet for the very first time and so so many tears and smiles to be had.

your happiness is before you, not behind you, you wild, raw, real, unique, talented, brilliant, sacred, rebellious soul. in this life remember that no matter where you go, there you are. and so are the past moments, etched into your skin. the bag full of bones you've been blessed with. what a beautiful bag full of bones you are. go and shine on and on and on. bring happiness to those around you. give others the permission to shine in this world, through letting your light shine.

dear self - your happiness is before you, not behind you

and i'm so excited for you

free printable: xmas crackers

oh em gee - you guys, it's almost xmas! the countdown is on, and time is running out! it's time to get those chrissy gifts sorted - stat! anyone who know's me, know's that i'm an absolute sucker for cute packaging. and while we all know that it's what's on the inside that counts, i think we'd all be lying if we didn't admit that just sometimes, we judge things by their appearance. so if you're looking for the perfect xmas packaging for your little gifts and treats - look no futher... i got you guys!

now while these crackers do require a little assembly, i swear that they are also the easiest thing in the world to put together - heck if you've got kids, put them to work for you and go put your feet up! (okay, so that's not exactly the best idea because there's a fair bit of handling scissors and craft knives - but hey, if it's a risk you're willing to take...) i love these crackers for packaging gifts, but you could absolutely use them on your christmas table too - just add some of those fancy cracker things that 'crack' when you crack the cracker and you're cracking! (yep, that just happened)

these crackers were designed to hold small gifts and sweet treats - but can be used in so many ways. for a gorgeous and simple gift idea include the recipients fave lollies or some mini cookies, then add a handwritten love note and loads of confetti! for the perfect sized confectionery gift to include in your crackers, mrtimothyjames loves happy lab's - happy beans test tubes (also available at target australia).

if you feel like sharing what you pop inside these crackers how you style them, share them with me on social media use the hashtag #mrtimothyjames
